5 things to check before you convert

Building consent: turning a garage into a habitable space needs building consent. We look after the application with council.

Kitchenette or laundry: adding either can make the space a separate dwelling, which may also need resource consent. We check this at the site visit.

Building Code: a habitable room needs insulation, building wrap, windows for light and ventilation, and a damp-proofed floor.

Ceiling height: at least 2.1 m from finished floor to finished ceiling. Lower garages may need the ceiling raised.

Parking: council rules may require off-street parking to stay. If the garage is your only parking, we plan an alternative with you.
